Why mobile-first design is non-negotiable for local trades.

Person using smartphone for emergency plumbing search

Picture this scenario: It's 7:00 AM. A homeowner wakes up, steps into their kitchen, and feels water soaking into their socks. A pipe has burst. Panic sets in. What is the very first thing they do?

They don't go to their home office, boot up their desktop computer, wait for Windows to load, and carefully type a search query. They reach into their pocket, pull out their smartphone with a wet hand, and urgently search for "emergency plumber near me."

The 60% Rule

If your local trades business—whether you are a plumber, electrician, mechanic, or landscaper—relies on a website that was built for desktop computers first, you are actively losing money. Over 60% of all local service searches happen on mobile devices. If your site takes more than three seconds to load, or if the user has to pinch and zoom to find your phone number, they will hit the back button and click on your competitor.

What does "Mobile-First" actually mean?

Mobile-first design is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of designing a massive desktop website and trying to awkwardly squeeze it down to fit on a phone screen, we start by designing for the phone. Once the mobile experience is flawless, lightning-fast, and highly converting, we scale the design up for tablets and desktops.

Google's Mobile-First Indexing

Beyond human psychology, there is a technical reason you need a mobile-first site. Google exclusively uses "Mobile-First Indexing." This means Google's search bots only look at the mobile version of your website to decide where you should rank. If your desktop site is beautiful but your mobile site is broken, Google will bury you on page 5.

The Rewind Approach

At Rewind, Jan and I don't build digital brochures. We build lead-generation machines. When we built the site for LJM Plumbing, we integrated custom WhatsApp routing directly into the mobile interface. The result? Customers could send a pre-filled text message with one tap, drastically cutting down friction and securing jobs instantly.

Stop treating mobile users as an afterthought. They are your primary audience.
